First trimester: The Big News.
Julie had felt off for a couple weeks. Scents bothered her and her stomach was unpredictable. A passing comment said entirely in jest from a coworker at the Community Center where she taught art and music after school and on weekends had Julie stop at a pharmacy for a test. And it was positive.
Surprising as this was, Julie was also happy. Now was the time for it. The world was finally righting itself and Julie was okay with this.
She was pregnant.
When she told Raleigh, he corrected her, the biggest most ridiculous grin on his face.
"No, Jules. We. We're pregnant." They were in this together.
Hair ties and noodles.
"Jules? You okay?"
It was date night and Julie was ruining it. Not on purpose, and Raleigh didn't seem to think so, but she knew she was. She was quiet, a bit short tempered and god help her. The noodle place smelled awful and it usually smelled so good to her.
"Yeah." A beat from Julie and then she's silently shaking her head, pushing herself up from her chair and running to the nearest bathroom.
Lunch made an appearance and Julie swore in frustration, eliciting gasps from an elderly woman who stepped in at the wrong time.
"S-sorry." There's a familiar knock at the bathroom's door and Julie pulls it open some, peeking out at Raleigh with some amusement.
"This is the women's bathroom, Raleigh." Her stomach is still shaking so she doesn't have much time. And he knows. It's why he simply hands her a hair tie and says "I'll get dinner to go."
Second Trimester: One and one make...four?
Babies first ultrasound. Raleigh is there for this, sitting in a chair by Julie who is stretched out on the examination table, her shirt hiked up to below her ribs and her stomach which hardly looks pregnant and just looks a bit soft, exposed. The doctor holds a wand to her stomach, running it over her abdomen until...
"Ah! There's the baby!" She pauses, peering at the screen over horn-rimmed glasses before adding "And they have a room mate."
"A what?" Julie and Raleigh speak simultaneously, both looking at the doctor with some confusion.
"A room mate? Does that mean...?" He stops mid question, his hand reaching for Julies, their fingers lacing together.
"We're having twins?" Julie finishes the question, looking at the screen herself as the doctor turns it for them. "Oh, my God. Raleigh. Look."
Raleigh leans slightly to do so, freezing in place before he's grinning, looking from the doctor to Julie and then at his twins.
He has tears in his eyes and Julie finds that beautiful.
Spoiled Kids.
Now she shows. Just a tiny bit. Enough that it makes it real for the both of them. She has one shoulder leaning on the door frame of what will be the babies room an she has a small smirk on her face. Raleigh is busy hanging up name plates that Julie made for the kids. "Hope" in a curly silver script and "Yancy" in a slightly more bold, gold colored one on off-white painted wood.
"Did you know," Julie says as she watches him. "That Newt sent over more gifts for the kids?"
Raleigh turns, an eyebrow raised and an amused smile on his face. "Did he? Is he still begging you to tell him the babies genders and all?"
Julie nods, trying to not laugh.
"He is. And you should see what he brought over." She tilts her head towards the closed closet doors and Raleigh points to confirm.
They're in there?
A nod from Julie. Raleigh heads over and pulls the closet door open and ---
"Jesus, Newt."
Yancy and Hope will be the proud owners of two very, very big stuffed Kaiju dolls and Newt will, for years to come, receive many a photograph of Raleigh, Julie and the kids, putting the dolls in weird outfits and playing with them all over the house.
Third trimester: Wiggle Room.
"Are they really moving that much?" Raleigh asks Julie as Julie tries to make herself comfortable on the bed. It's not working. She's pretty sure her stomach doubled in size overnight. She's eight months along and the twins are in constant motion.
And it kind of hurts. In fact, it hurts a lot. It's constant and sometimes she wonders if the kids are already starting to fight. It leaves her a bit irritable but she keeps that in check. This will be over soon and she'll be holding her babies and actually be able to see them.
She silently reaches for Raleigh's hand, pressing it against a spot a few inches to the left of her belly button where one of the kids is kicking and flailing.
"Right there."
"That one's a soccer player."
"Or a kick boxer." Julie's calmed by Raleigh's enthusiasm, sitting up enough to kiss his forehead before stretching out again.
"Are you okay?" He asks, watching her wince slightly. Julie can't lie to him, so she shakes her head.
"They move a lot and they don't have a lot of room to move, so it hurts."
Raleigh leans close to her stomach and speaks to his children. "Hey, you two. Be nice to your mom, okay? She loves you two a lot, so give her a break." A pause. "Or come out. That'd work, too."
"Like they'll listen," Julie teases, ruffling his hair some.
They're at the hospital a few hours later and the next morning at exactly 7:02 AM, Hope and Yancy Beckett make their way into the world.
